SLEEPING GIANT RANCH

Sleeping Giant Ranch nestled on the shoulder of Blacktail Mountain in a secret, relatively undiscovered south valley pocket of Steamboat Springs, Colorado as part of the original “preserve development” in Routt County. With breathtaking , 360-degree views that includes Sleeping Giant, the rugged Flattop Mountains and Sarvis Wilderness Area, this net zero project with a long story about love, listening to intuition, and a promise made on a beat up redwood deck over a decade ago.

Simplicity and sustainability anchors the project. The barn home design draws on the simple common sense of our ancestors for the region for shedding water, optimizing light, and building efficiency in the conditioned spaces, drawing heat to the upper levels in this cold climate. The home achieves net-zero energy performance through carefully integrated passive design strategies that optimize natural heating and cooling. There is no gas to the property; instead, a state-of-the art air-to-water heat pump and a high-efficiency wood-burning fireplace provide warmth during the cold months in Colorado, and the domestic hot water is also served by a high-efficiency heat pump.

Since its completion, the home has become a vibrant hub of activity: the setting for milestone birthdays, late-night puzzles, and family game marathons and lots--and lots--of ski days.
