BOOKLOVERS DECO REMODEL

This original 1940s post-war home was in dire need of an update. Rather than starting fresh, we chose to celebrate and expand upon its existing arches and curves, infusing the design with subtle Art Nouveau influences.

The homeowners—a lively, adventurous family of five—cherish books, sports, and gathering for family dinners. Natural daylight and ample bookshelves were essential to the project, so we incorporated both in abundance.

The original house had a dark, fragmented layout that clashed with the family’s warm and welcoming lifestyle. They also needed a private office, improved backyard access, and quiet retreats that supported their daily rhythm.

To achieve this, we nearly mirrored the entire floor plan, relocating the kitchen to the sun-filled south side and making it the heart of the home between the dining and sitting areas. We also introduced a powder room, office, mudroom, and den to the main level.

The entry now features broad arches leading into the living room and office, reinforcing the home’s timeless elegance. We completely reimagined the fireplace with fluted oak and a marble-inspired surround—bringing it into the modern era while honoring 1940s design motifs. Custom bookshelves flank the fireplace, transforming the family sitting room into a cozy retreat.

In the kitchen, a light palette and a generous island create a sense of openness, while relocating the refrigerator to a walk-in pantry enhances the spacious feel. This central hub seamlessly connects all the public spaces of the home.

Reflecting on the transformation, the homeowner shared, “You’ve not only transformed our home, but you’ve also helped me engage with it in a more expansive and joyful way.”
